American Airlines grant helps MSC Renovate Bathrooms

On June 29, 2015, Men’s Shelter of Charlotte completed a renovation and repair project for the shower facilities at the Lucille Giles Center, the shelter located at 3410 Statesville Avenue, with a $98,540 grant from American Airlines Community Foundation.

The Statesville Avenue campus is home to an average of 150 men each night working with case managers to obtain income through employment and/or benefits. Gaining income is an important key tCutting ribbon board and AA memberso the Men’s Shelter of Charlotte’s formula – Income + Housing + Support = An End to Homelessness.

At the Statesville Avenue campus, which used to be a warehouse, the shower facilities were damaged and deteriorating. The generous grant was used to repair water damage, replace damaged and outdated plumbing as well as fixtures, making them more serviceable, functional, and user friendly.

“Providing a safe and secure place to sleep, shower, and eat meals is critical to building trust and stabilizing our clients — a vital step to helping 500 men this year increase their income and obtain more appropriate housing thus ending their experience with homelessness,” said Carson Dean, Executive Director of Men’s Shelter of Charlotte. “We are thankful for the commitment of American Airlines and we look forward to continuing our partnership for years to come.”

“We are extremely excited to support the Men’s Shelter of Charlotte with this important project,” said Terri Pope, American Airline’s vice president of operations in Charlotte. “We believe in the mission of this great organization and know with this grant the men will have a safe, clean, comfortable place to help them get on their feet.”

“Every man who walks through our doors has a shattering story of job loss, family tragedy, addiction, illness or childhood trauma,” said Stephanie Shatto, Program Director. “A space that meets basic needs — meals, showers, beds — and that provides support services such as medical care, mental health/substance abuse treatment, employment assistance, housing searches, literacy support in a safe environment, is conducive to helping men move forward and build momentum toward ending their experience with homelessness.”
