Replacement of Statesville Shelter Planned for 2020

We are excited to announce plans today (January 23, 2020) to replace our aging 180-bed overnight shelter located at 3410 Statesville Avenue. The current building, an old warehouse converted for an emergency winter shelter in 2005, was designed to meet the most basic needs – a place for men to stay warm, dry and clean. All 180 beds are filled every night along with additional mats on the floor during extreme weather (like the cold this week), which can number more than 30.

The 196-bed replacement shelter is designed to help men emerge from homelessness by adding space for on-site case management and employment services. The new facility will feature a cooking kitchen, guest laundry services, and more privacy in the dorms. A group room will enable classes to be held on-site and a mobile computer lab will assist with employment-related activities.

Honeywell was recognized today as a major funder for the transformational project, contributing a gift of $500,000 to support the $4.4 million project. With nearly $2.7 million already committed to the project, we are actively soliciting the remaining funds needed and hope to break ground this spring. Construction is estimated to take about nine months, with the expectation of guests being able to move in before the end of next winter. Fortunately, guests will not have to be relocated during construction, as the new building will be constructed behind the current building on the same property.

Greg Efthimiou, Honeywell Corporate Communications, and CEO Liz Clasen-Kelly announce $500,000 gift to help buid the new shelter replacement building.
