Humbled Again

My job as executive director of the Men’s Shelter of Charlotte is many things:  exciting, stressful, rewarding, challenging, frustrating, and fascinating to use just a few adjectives.  But every so often, especially when I least expect it, I am deservedly humbled.  Today is one of those days.  I had a conversation with one of our guests who has overcome a lot, including prison and a physical disability.  The details, even the purpose, of that conversation is not important.  What humbled me, again, was how emotional he became while telling me about his life turning around and how appreciative he was of our staff for helping him so much during his time with us.  This is a strong man, a tough man, who has endured a lot in his lifetime.  But while shaking hands and embracing for a moment, what I really saw was a man just like me.  Humbled again and thankful for it!

Carson Dean

In September 2008 I became the Executive Director of the Men's Shelter of Charlotte. I've spent almost 15 years working to end homelessness in North Carolina. After working with homeless and runaway youth in Raleigh, I served as the Director of the South Wilmington Street Center (men's shelter) in Wake County and then worked on Orange County's 10 Year Plan to End Homelessness. I am a former board chair for the North Carolina Coalition to End Homelessness and former chair of the Homeless Services Network in Charlotte. In 2014 I served as the partner agency representative on the United Way Central Carolinas board of directors.
