Couldn’t Be More Proud of Our Board

Nonprofits can’t exist without a Board of Directors.  While that’s legally true, I believe it should also be true in many other ways – leadership, fundraising, advocacy, fiduciary oversight, etc. At the Men’s Shelter, we have an incredibly passionate and engaged board.  They volunteer, they ask lots of great questions, they scrutinize, and they champion.  One of the reasons I’m so proud of my board is that they truly strive to set the tone for our agency, our staff, and our stakeholders. Our fiscal year begins on July 1st.  A goal our board set for this year was to make their annual financial pledges early in the fiscal year.  They did so much more!  Our board pledged more than their collective goal for this year’s budget, every board member made a pledge, and 100% of our board members paid at least a portion their pledge prior to this week’s board meeting.  Talk about setting an example for others! Having a passion for our mission is the number one criteria we use in board member selection, but all boards must help raise money.  Ours truly gets that to ask others for something you have to have skin in the game yourself.  What a privilege to work with a board so committed to the mission that they go big and go early!

Father’s Day Wallet Drive

This Father’s Day – celebrate a father, donate a wallet!

Father's Day Wallet Drive

Men’s Shelter of Charlotte remembers while its clients are experiencing homelessness – it is not an identity. The men are fathers, sons, brothers, husbands, friends and play many roles in our community.

To honor those roles and remember our common humanity, gently used and new wallets will be collected for clients of Men’s Shelter of Charlotte. To support programming for men experiencing homelessness and who are ready to transform their lives by enrolling in our programs, $20 or more inserted into the wallet is suggested.

When to donate your wallet-

Friday, June 13 – Monday, June 16, 9:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. daily

Where to donate wallets –

Men’s Shelter of Charlotte, 1210 North Tryon Street, side entrance

Carson Dean, Riley’s Dad & Men’s Shelter of Charlotte Executive Director

Father’s Day for me is a reminder of how special a gift my son is to me.  Being a father is a joy and a tremendous responsibility.  Having my son look up to me and love me unconditionally has humbled me in so many ways.  My son’s need for guidance, accountability, and someone to act goofy with has taught me so much about being a father.  I only hope I’m half as good as a dad that I know my son will one day be for his kids.  This Father’s Day I’m making a gift to Men’s Shelter of Charlotte in Riley’s name because he understands there are so many fathers in the shelter who want nothing more than to be dad to their own children.

Amy Tribble, Director of Development, daughter of Paul Shafer (1913-1992)

Though my father has been deceased for nearly 22 years, I still miss him terribly and frequently long for his guidance.  The heartfelt letters of encouragement and support he wrote to me my Freshman year in college are filled with insights I still hang on to.  How lucky I was to be loved and supported so unconditionally.  My father was a role model who made a habit of practicing random acts of kindness long before the phrase was coined.  He was one of the most thoughtful, generous people I have ever known.  This Father’s Day I will make a contribution to Men’s Shelter of Charlotte in his memory and in the spirit of giving the same type of unconditional support that was given to me to men who are experiencing homelessness.

Jammin’ at Home

Jammin’ at Home concert benefits Men’s Shelter of Charlotte

The event is inspired and organized by Corey Hall, a student at University of North Carolina at Charlotte Department of Social Work, earning his Bachelor of Social Work degree. Corey is an intern with the Men’s Shelter of Charlotte and a he has a passion for helping solve homelessness and for music. Corey shared, “It is an honor to work with dedicated people who love the individuals that they serve.  I feel compelled and inspired to give back to the Men’s Shelter of Charlotte for what they have given to me; not only the knowledge to succeed in my field, but reinforcement in my belief of the inherent goodness of man.   By organizing this benefit concert I hope to do my part for the Men’s Shelter of Charlotte’s mission to assist each man served by ending their experience with homelessness.”

The concert features local music talent from Charlotte and the region.  Door prizes will be raffled and participation is guaranteed with price of admission.  The Saloon will serve food and drink at the time of the event (not included with admission).

The goal is to raise $2,000 for the Men’s Shelter of Charlotte to support education, employment, housing and well-being programs for men experiencing homelessness in Charlotte.
