What We Do

What We Do - Uptown Shelter Charlotte

The Men's Shelter offers two services to our guests: emergency shelter and the FOCUS program (Freedom of Opportunity, Committed to Unlimited Success).  We provide these services at both the Tryon Street and Statesville Ave campuses.

Emergency shelter is for overnight guests and additional overflow guests during periods of inclement weather. Emergency shelter includes meal service, shelter, addresses basic needs, and all guests have access to the additional services offered through the shelter and our community partners (see below.)

Other details about the Men's Shelter are available below:

FOCUS is a case management program for guests that provides the same services as emergency shelter, but also offers specific support components including:

The Men's Shelter offers a number of additional services to our guests such as a GED program, Anger Management, Individual and Group Therapy, 12-Step Support Groups, and a variety of Life Enrichment services that vary from budgeting classes to creative writing to yoga.

Our services are further enriched by a number of community partners that specialize in a variety of issues. Mecklenburg County offers a certified substance abuse treatment program (SACOT) on-site, as well as a Homeless Support Services liaison. C.W. Williams Community Health Care provides a nurse on-site four days per week, and the Charlotte Dental Society offers dental care to the community once a week at the shelter. ACCESS by CMC-Randolph, located right behind Men's Shelter, provides mental health treatment and outreach services to individuals experiencing homelessness.

The men we serve play an important role in the process of helping homeless men by participating in the Peer Advisory Council (PAC).  This group of guests serves as a gateway for communication with between guests and staff.  Their mission is “to advocate the concerns of the community with staff, to ensure the fairness for all and the quality of life during one’s stay at the Men’s Shelter of Charlotte.  Click here to see a copy of their latest newsletter.
