Carson Dean became the Executive Director of the Men’s Shelter of Charlotte in September 2008. A native North Carolinian, Carson has worked throughout the state over the past decade to bring about an end to homelessness. He was the coordinator for the Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness in Orange County, NC before moving to Charlotte. For several years, Carson was the director of Wake County’s homeless shelter and before that oversaw a program for homeless and runaway youth at Haven House Services in Raleigh. Carson is a board member of the North Carolina Coalition to End Homelessness, has consulted on projects and presented workshops throughout the state on best practice approaches for ending homelessness, and serves as Chair of Charlotte-Mecklenburg’s Homeless Services Network as well as the Mecklenburg County Emergency Food & Shelter Local Board.
Carson is a graduate of N.C. State University (B.A.), Appalachian State University (M.A.) and holds a certificate in Nonprofit Management through Duke University’s continuing education program. Prior to becoming an advocate for those experiencing homelessness, Carson was a history teacher. Carson and his wife Kris have a terrific son Riley and three charismatic dogs, Cooper, Sammy, and Buster. The Deans are avid boaters and love living so close to Lake Norman.
