Bill S. struggled with addiction for over 30 years. Growing up in an abusive household, he sought relief in alcohol and drugs at an early age. Bill arrived at the Men’s Shelter of Charlotte (MSC) in September 2010 after a failed relationship brought him from California. He was ready to make a change in his life when he heard an announcement about the substance abuse program held on-site at MSC. After discussing it with his case manager, he decided to give it a try.
Charles L. came to MSC in October 2009 after an extended period of unemployment left him homeless and living on the streets. While he worked to gain employment, he asked MSC staff to help him find housing. With the help of our staff, he was placed on the Charlotte Housing Authority waiting list, but he soon received a letter denying his eligibility based upon a prior misdemeanor.
Thanks to a generous grant from US Airways aimed at helping MSC’s homeless guests get home to their families, Albert was reunited with his family on Thanksgiving Day 2010. Originally from San Francisco, the 59-year old veteran had lived in NC for the past 14 years – and had not seen his family during this time.
The Shelter has given me hope and wisdom and I do not ever have to use drugs again.
